The art of reflexology is an ancient therapy that has been practiced for over 5000 years and was introduced to the western world over 100 years ago. Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary therapy which is based on the theory that various points on the feet correspond with different areas of the body. Reflexologists believe that working these points aids relaxation and helps improve wellbeing.

Reflexology and conception

If you are trying to conceive, reflexology can help support you and your partner both physically and emotionally - whether you have just started trying to conceive or have been trying for a while.

If you have been given a clearly defined diagnosis and have been offered treatment, you will probably want to go ahead and take that route. However, if you have been given the diagnosis of unexplained infertility, this can be very frustrating with no clear problem to focus on, and no clear way forward. You may still have been offered medical treatment, but may decide to allow the natural route more time. This will be a personal decision, often based upon your age.

Whatever happens, you may find that you and/or your partner would value support at this time, on both physical and emotional levels. Having reflexology will provide you with relaxation and stress reduction; this in itself can be beneficial for conception. Reflexology gives you an opportunity to take time out for yourself. I can also provide a listening ear, which can be very comforting at a time when you may have few friends and family that you wish to confide in.

Reflexology for pregnancy

Reflexology can be used throughout pregnancy, but is usually applied from the thirteenth week onwards. A full history will be taken to ensure that it's safe and appropriate to carry out treatment. Reflexology can be used for general well-being or to address such health issues such as sleeping problems as they arise.

Reflexology and migraine

Lesley has treated many prople who have suffered with migraines. In most cases a course of treatment has reduced the frequency of attacks, and in others, the migraines have ceased.

What happens when I go for reflexology?

You will be asked to remove your shoes and socks. A full medical history will be taken and you will be asked to sign a consent form agreeing to the treatment. All information will be kept confidentially.

I will use my thumbs and fingers to apply pressure to the feet and sometimes the lower leg. Some areas may feel tender when pressed, but this will pass.
The general experience should feel relaxing.

Reiki, (Japanese word for universal life energy), was re-discovered in Japan in the 19th century by a man called Mikao Usui.

The therapist lays his or her hands on the client who is lying down, fully clothed. This may bring about deep relaxation, reduce tension and promote a feeling of wellbeing.

Indian Head Massage has been used in India for many years, to promote relaxation and increase energy levels. It is applied not only to the head, but also the neck. The therapy is applied through the clothes, to a person in the seated position. It usually induces a state of deep relaxation.
